SUMMARY:The History of Arizona Highways Magazine
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Highways Magazine has approached the 100th year of business. As mainstream magazines continue to fail in the digital age\, how has a publication that began as a brochure in the early 1920s continued to succeed for over nine decades? In this presentation\, former publisher Win Holden will share the compelling back story of this world-renowned magazine and how it has not only survived but thrived using an unconventional business model incorporating licensing\, retail ancillary products and featuring world-class landscape photographers. While owned by the State of Arizona and remaining part of the Arizona Department of Transportation\, the magazine receives no state funding support. It’s a compelling and unorthodox story of a magazine that delivers over $65 million in annual economic impact to the state by enchanting subscribers every month in all 50 states and 100 countries. \nA display by Leisure World Photography Club will be available at 5:30 to enhance the presentation.

SUMMARY:“Play Ball!” 135 Years in the Grand Canyon State
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a baseball nut or a casual fan\, Bill Harrison is going to tell the story about the pride\, passion\, and history of “America’s Sport” in Arizona.  In the 1930s\, when professional baseball teams were being lured away from Arizona\, Governor Rose Mofford successfully enticed them to stay in Cactus League.   And\, of course\, the Arizona Diamondbacks are always in the hunt for the World Series win. \nBaseball is not just a sport\, its history is rooted in soldiers at remote forts and incarcerated Americans of Japanese descent who played to survive their circumstances. \nIt’s that time of year when the crowds start coming to enjoy Spring Training games\, so . . . \nLet’s Play Ball! \nLeisure World Foundation Community Grants are usually presented at this event.

SUMMARY:Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter: Legendary Architect of Southwest
DESCRIPTION:A traveler to Grand Canyon National Park\, including the Hopi House\, Hermit’s Rest\, Lookout Studio and the Watchtower\, will have seen the work of Mary Colter.  Her architectural work has been recognized in the Mary Jane Colter National Landmark District in “recognition of their exceptional value to the nation.”  Eleven of Mary’s buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and four are listed as National Historic Landmarks.  How did a woman in 1901 rise and become so recognized in a male-dominated building industry?  Bill Harrison will talk about Mary Colter’s forty-seven year career with twenty-one completed major construction projects.  She had to be tough\, outspoken\, stubborn and tenacious.

SUMMARY:Ancient Ruins of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:What happened to bring dozens of ancient cultures to this place called Arizona?  Bill Harrison will be helping to examine the lives and dwellings of some of the best-preserved ruins in the world.  Casa Grande Ruins was the very first to be granted protection by the U.S. Government in 1892 when it was designated a Cultural reserve.  It became a national monument in 1918. \nMontezuma Castle was nearly destroyed by careless visitors in the 1890s.  It was rescued and protected as a National Monument in 1906.  The ancient sites are easy to find and to visit. \nHowever\, one of the ruins near Leisure World\, is so remote that few people have even heard of it.  It is located at the top of the Superstition Mountains.  Circlestone has baffled scientists for years.  It’s a huge circle of heavy sandstone blocks that took thousands of years to create.  Was it used for sacred ceremonies\, recording the passage of time or perhaps to make celestial observations?  Find out by attending this presentation. \nThe LW Photography Club will also be displaying members’ works.

SUMMARY:From Fire to Empire - The Remarkable Burkhorn Baths Story
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of seven decades\, the Buckhorn Mineral Baths and Wildlife Museum became one of Mesa’s and the State’s most recognizable and memorable Main Street icons.  Residents have seen it on the corners of Main Street and Recker Road.  People have wondered “what’s going on there?” \nBuckhorn Mineral Baths attracted celebrities and others to its healing waters\, wildlife museum and quirky amenities.  It was a principal influence on enticing major league baseball to begin annual training in Mesa and the Valley.  The fascinating account of Ted and Alice Sliger and their rags-to-riches story is part of the Buckhorn Book\, co-authored by Jay Mark.  Come to hear the story and the future of Buckhorn Mineral Baths.

SUMMARY:LECTURE: Series Info- UNDER Arizona\, Our Strange & Magnificent Caves
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Bill Harrison\, “Arizona’s Road Scholar” \n“Arizona is an enchanted land with limitless panoramas and distances dwarfed by the clear\, dry air. A land of sage and cedar and mountain forest; of broad mesas and rich\, peaceful valleys.” Roger Birdseye wrote these words in 1926\, praising the exquisite beauty to be found in Arizona. At the time\, he didn’t realize another magnificent landscape existed just under his boots. Kartchner Caverns in Southern Arizona are called “the last undiscovered treasures of the American West.” Two young men discovered the caverns in 1974. To protect the cave from vandals\, they kept the location secret for 14 years. Today\, Kartchner Caverns State Park attracts millions of visitors who want to experience this extraordinary environment. Grand Canyon Caverns\, off Historic 66 in Northern Arizona\, could be one of the largest caves in the world. Research indicates there are massive chambers yet to be explored in this dry\, pristine condition after decades of tourists\, still has intriguing secrets to share.

SUMMARY:LECTURE: Series Info- Songs and Sounds of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Bill Quehrn from the Arizona Commemorative Air Force \nBill will tell the story of the amazing role popular music played in the life of the “Greatest Generation” at home and in uniform in WWII. Like no other time in history\, the music of the 1940s\, the “Golden Age of the Big Bands”\, delved into the patriotic heights and personal depths of those living through those frightful years. The program features sound clips of 20 songs selected from over 150 titles by the top writers\, arrangers\, and performers of that era. The songs speak of courage\, sacrifice\, commitment\, valor\, and eventual victory performed by the most popular artists of the period. Voices of General Eisenhower\, Prime Minister Churchill\, and others add to the richness of the music.

SUMMARY:LECTURE: Goldfield from Boom\, to Bust\, to Boom!
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Bill HarrisonIn 1893\, Goldfield became a boomtown! The discovery of gold in the rugged foothills of the Superstition Mountains\ncaused the Arizona Territory to celebrate! Local newspapers predicted Goldfield would be bigger than Phoenix in a few\nyears. Hundreds of rowdy men enjoyed saloons\, gambling house and a brothel in Goldfield. \nUnfortunately\, in the early years of the 20th Century\, the gold ran out and a fire leveled the town. \nThis is the remarkable story of a ghost town brought back to life. For more than 30 years\, Bob Schoose has carefully rebuilt Goldfield along the Apache Trail. \nToday\, travelers from all over the world visit the ghost town to experience the excitement of Arizona’s Wild West! \nDesert and cowboy photography will be exhibited by LW Photography Club. \nAll lectures are co-sponsored by the LW Foundation and the Recreation

SUMMARY:LECTURE: Prescott\, Arizona: Everybody’s Hometown
DESCRIPTION:The Leisure World Foundation Lecture Series is presenting\, “Prescott\, Arizona: Everybody’s Hometown on Wednesday\, November 18.  This free program on the historic town of Prescott – pronounced by locals as “press-kit” like biscuit – is presented by the very entertaining Bill Harrison. \nFor more than 150 years\, this vibrant community north of Phoenix in the cool Bradshaw Mountains\, has been welcoming visitors as if they were family!  Prescott was the first Arizona Territorial Capital in 1867.  The boomtown offered 50 rowdy saloons that entertained thousands of rawhide-rough cowboys\, crusty miners\, notorious outlaws and famous lawmen. \nToday\, Prescott is a charming\, cultured\, and artistic community with more than 40\,000 residents.  Each year dozens of events are enjoyed on the verdant lawn of the Yavapai County Courthouse. \nIn addition to the annual Frontier Days Rodeo\, Prescott was honored in 1989 as the Official Christmas City of Arizona. \nNo visit to Prescott would be complete without touring the historic Elks Opera House.  The new Elks Theatre and Performing Arts Center reopened in 2012 after eight years of restoration.  The colorful history\, dynamic people\, unique architecture\, and the picturesque beauty of this Northern Arizona gem\, will be enjoyed by everyone!
