SUMMARY:“Wild West Fiddle Project“ by Dr. Kate Rose AZ Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Wild West Fiddle Project: Discover Arizona’s Musical Heritage Through Music\, Dance\, and Story \nThe Wild West Fiddle Project: a participative musical talk about Arizona’s folk heritage \nExperience Arizona’s history in a way\, the attendees can hear\, feel\, and join. The Wild West Fiddle Project is an interactive musical journey through the diverse traditions that have shaped the Southwest\, bringing together fiddle tunes\, songs\, dance\, storytelling\, and fascinating historical insights from across the region. \nLed by folklorist\, musician\, and researcher Dr. Kate Rose\, the program explores the rich meeting of Indigenous\, Mexican\, Anglo\, African American\, European\, and other cultural traditions that have influenced Arizona’s musical landscape. Audiences discover forgotten melodies\, surprising historical connections\, and the stories of the people who carried these traditions across generations. \nDr. Kate Rose is a Flagstaff-based fiddler and tradition-bearer. Having spent two years studying with fiddling farmers in County Clare\, Ireland\, Dr. Rose brings a deep sense of music as rooted in landscapes and the rhythms of rural life. Her research and unique performing style reveal and revive the cross-cultural music and dance traditions of the American Southwest.  The music naturally intermingles with the deep roots of others’ traditions. \nHer talks\, which present history through true stories of Arizona musicians from the past\, are often accompanied by master rhythm expert Armand Ramirez. He is a guitarist\, a master multigenre player with decades of professional musicianship\, an amazing ear\, and a creative\, danceable flair. His wide-ranging experience includes jazz\, Celtic\, classical\, flamenco\, folk traditions\, and Latin music. He is also a passionate researcher of local history and his own family’s rooted Arizona connections\, bringing a multidisciplinary approach to cultural storytelling and music. \nMore than a concert\, the Wild West Fiddle Project invites everyone to participate. Learn a simple community dance\, clap rhythms\, sing along\, ask questions\, and experience the joy of traditional music as a living\, shared experience. Whether a lifelong Arizonan or new to the state\, all will leave with a deeper appreciation for the cultures\, histories\, and communities that continue to shape Arizona today. \nThis program and speaker combine scholarship\, performance\, and participation to celebrate the remarkable diversity and enduring spirit of Arizona’s living traditions. \nThis exciting presentation will be held on Wednesday\, October 21 in the Hopi-Pima Room of Rec 2.  Leisure World Foundation in cooperation with the Rec Dept are pleased to start the season with this special speaker. \n  \nDesert Financial will be present to answer questions about wills and trusts.  They provide the cookies\, which are served at the end of the presentation. \nThere will be no speakers for November or December.  Look for information on January 6\, 2027\, speaker in December issue of newspaper.

DESCRIPTION:Jeff Bayer will be sharing his lifelong involvement with famous people and popular events in American culture. \nJeff began his photojournalism career as a game day assistant to the Public Relations team in the San Francisco 49ers Press Box in 1971.  During this period\, he also began working with legendary radio reporter Sam Skinner covering all the Bay Area sports teams for almost twenty years. \nJeff’s first year as a 49ers field photographer was in 1980.  The 49ers won their first of five Super Bowls the following year.  By the mid-1980s\, he was working more closely with the team and was privileged to travel with the 49ers for over 15 years.  He has been the featured photographer in three 49er books and has multiple awards from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He is listed in the 49ers Media Guide as one of the team’s “Historical Photographers”. \nIn 1999\, he was asked to become Director of Operations of the 49ers Foundation\, the non-profit arm of the team.  This began another chapter in his life – non-profit management.  Upon moving to Arizona and Leisure World ten years ago\, Jeff began working with Copa Health\, formerly Marc Community Resources.  Copa ‘s name should be familiar as they operate the Rendezvous Café within Leisure World. \nOver his career\, Jeff has also covered professional golf\, baseball and even a little basketball.  He is the lead photographer at the American Century Championship\, a celebrity golf event held annually at Lake Tahoe. \nHe will use a mixture of music and stories of his travels through the years.  He has used his camera for many events from concerts to star-studded events and important ceremonies.  Come and enjoy his enthusiastic telling of his involvement in various events. \nPlease join him on Wednesday\, February 19 in the Hopi/Pima Room at 6:00 pm.  This FREE event is co-sponsored by Leisure World Foundation and the Leisure World Rec Department.  Refreshments are also sponsored by Desert Financial:  Wills and Trust Division.

SUMMARY:So\, You Lived at the Grand Canyon?
DESCRIPTION:Join longtime Grand Canyon resident\, educator\, photographer\, and author Mike Buchheit as he shares an intimate familiarity with the world’s most-famous chasm. Through personal accounts and a selection of his favorite images\, Mike will connect or reconnect audience members with the amazing landscape.  The Grand Canyon’s history\, biotic communities\, geology\, life-sustaining waterways\, pioneer and tribal histories.  Mike will include the many ways to enjoy the park from rim to river. \nMike’s work was juried into the prestigious exhibit Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography\, which toured the country as part of the Smithsonian Institute’s Traveling Exhibition Series. Arizona fine art galleries have showcased his work\, particularly Tanglewood Fine Arts in Flagstaff and Tilt Galleries in Scottsdale. \nRaised beside the Mississippi River in his native Iowa\, Mike relocated to Scottsdale in the late 80s.  His passion for the Grand Canyon backcountry was forged as a counterbalance to the hectic pace of corporate life in the Valley of the Sun. \nMike relocated to Grand Canyon National Park in 1994 where he is now director of the Grand Canyon Field Institute\, a leading outdoor education program\, where he also teaches landscape photography.  He was a full-time resident\, two-thousand-mile backpacker and frequent river runner. \nThough his interests are many\, it is in his capacity as a photographer that Mike has found the greatest artistic freedom in conveying his connection to the Grand Canyon.  “Living at the Grand Canyon is like living in a postcard\, “Mike said\, “It defies description in a way\, but it was always inspirational.” \nHe will be sharing his love of the Grand Canyon in his slide show presentation.  So\, step inside the Grand Canyon with Mike! \nThe Photography Club will display related images as part of this presentation.  So\, come at 5:30 to see their creative work. \nThis FREE presentation is made possible with cooperation of the Rec Department and Desert Financial: Wills and Trust Division AND your Leisure World Foundation.

SUMMARY:The History of Arizona Highways Magazine
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Highways Magazine has approached the 100th year of business. As mainstream magazines continue to fail in the digital age\, how has a publication that began as a brochure in the early 1920s continued to succeed for over nine decades? In this presentation\, former publisher Win Holden will share the compelling back story of this world-renowned magazine and how it has not only survived but thrived using an unconventional business model incorporating licensing\, retail ancillary products and featuring world-class landscape photographers. While owned by the State of Arizona and remaining part of the Arizona Department of Transportation\, the magazine receives no state funding support. It’s a compelling and unorthodox story of a magazine that delivers over $65 million in annual economic impact to the state by enchanting subscribers every month in all 50 states and 100 countries. \nA display by Leisure World Photography Club will be available at 5:30 to enhance the presentation.

SUMMARY:“Play Ball!” 135 Years in the Grand Canyon State
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a baseball nut or a casual fan\, Bill Harrison is going to tell the story about the pride\, passion\, and history of “America’s Sport” in Arizona.  In the 1930s\, when professional baseball teams were being lured away from Arizona\, Governor Rose Mofford successfully enticed them to stay in Cactus League.   And\, of course\, the Arizona Diamondbacks are always in the hunt for the World Series win. \nBaseball is not just a sport\, its history is rooted in soldiers at remote forts and incarcerated Americans of Japanese descent who played to survive their circumstances. \nIt’s that time of year when the crowds start coming to enjoy Spring Training games\, so . . . \nLet’s Play Ball! \nLeisure World Foundation Community Grants are usually presented at this event.

SUMMARY:Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter: Legendary Architect of Southwest
DESCRIPTION:A traveler to Grand Canyon National Park\, including the Hopi House\, Hermit’s Rest\, Lookout Studio and the Watchtower\, will have seen the work of Mary Colter.  Her architectural work has been recognized in the Mary Jane Colter National Landmark District in “recognition of their exceptional value to the nation.”  Eleven of Mary’s buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and four are listed as National Historic Landmarks.  How did a woman in 1901 rise and become so recognized in a male-dominated building industry?  Bill Harrison will talk about Mary Colter’s forty-seven year career with twenty-one completed major construction projects.  She had to be tough\, outspoken\, stubborn and tenacious.

DESCRIPTION:What happened to bring dozens of ancient cultures to this place called Arizona?  Bill Harrison will be helping to examine the lives and dwellings of some of the best-preserved ruins in the world.  Casa Grande Ruins was the very first to be granted protection by the U.S. Government in 1892 when it was designated a Cultural reserve.  It became a national monument in 1918. \nMontezuma Castle was nearly destroyed by careless visitors in the 1890s.  It was rescued and protected as a National Monument in 1906.  The ancient sites are easy to find and to visit. \nHowever\, one of the ruins near Leisure World\, is so remote that few people have even heard of it.  It is located at the top of the Superstition Mountains.  Circlestone has baffled scientists for years.  It’s a huge circle of heavy sandstone blocks that took thousands of years to create.  Was it used for sacred ceremonies\, recording the passage of time or perhaps to make celestial observations?  Find out by attending this presentation. \nThe LW Photography Club will also be displaying members’ works.

SUMMARY:From Fire to Empire - The Remarkable Burkhorn Baths Story
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of seven decades\, the Buckhorn Mineral Baths and Wildlife Museum became one of Mesa’s and the State’s most recognizable and memorable Main Street icons.  Residents have seen it on the corners of Main Street and Recker Road.  People have wondered “what’s going on there?” \nBuckhorn Mineral Baths attracted celebrities and others to its healing waters\, wildlife museum and quirky amenities.  It was a principal influence on enticing major league baseball to begin annual training in Mesa and the Valley.  The fascinating account of Ted and Alice Sliger and their rags-to-riches story is part of the Buckhorn Book\, co-authored by Jay Mark.  Come to hear the story and the future of Buckhorn Mineral Baths.

SUMMARY:LECTURE: Series Info- UNDER Arizona\, Our Strange & Magnificent Caves
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Bill Harrison\, “Arizona’s Road Scholar” \n“Arizona is an enchanted land with limitless panoramas and distances dwarfed by the clear\, dry air. A land of sage and cedar and mountain forest; of broad mesas and rich\, peaceful valleys.” Roger Birdseye wrote these words in 1926\, praising the exquisite beauty to be found in Arizona. At the time\, he didn’t realize another magnificent landscape existed just under his boots. Kartchner Caverns in Southern Arizona are called “the last undiscovered treasures of the American West.” Two young men discovered the caverns in 1974. To protect the cave from vandals\, they kept the location secret for 14 years. Today\, Kartchner Caverns State Park attracts millions of visitors who want to experience this extraordinary environment. Grand Canyon Caverns\, off Historic 66 in Northern Arizona\, could be one of the largest caves in the world. Research indicates there are massive chambers yet to be explored in this dry\, pristine condition after decades of tourists\, still has intriguing secrets to share.

SUMMARY:LECTURE: Series Info- Songs and Sounds of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Bill Quehrn from the Arizona Commemorative Air Force \nBill will tell the story of the amazing role popular music played in the life of the “Greatest Generation” at home and in uniform in WWII. Like no other time in history\, the music of the 1940s\, the “Golden Age of the Big Bands”\, delved into the patriotic heights and personal depths of those living through those frightful years. The program features sound clips of 20 songs selected from over 150 titles by the top writers\, arrangers\, and performers of that era. The songs speak of courage\, sacrifice\, commitment\, valor\, and eventual victory performed by the most popular artists of the period. Voices of General Eisenhower\, Prime Minister Churchill\, and others add to the richness of the music.
